School and Facilities
The Will Adams Centre is a pupil referral unit which takes KS4 students who have been permanently excluded from one or more mainstream schools. We currently have 50 students on our roll, all of whom have behavioural, social or emotional difficulties. In addition to this, some of or students also have learning needs.
Many of our students have had a difficult educational past, often with extended periods of absence from school, resulting in students arriving often with a very negative view of school and levels which are well below the national average for their age group. The Will Adams centre recognises these difficulties which often prove barriers to continued learning and therefore timetables and support programmes are very much tailored to the needs of the individual. We have a wealth of support from outside agencies and intervention strategies are readily used wherever the need arises.
Our staff are experienced and trained in working with young people who experience these difficulties and small class numbers, often with a teaching assistant for support, helps students to re-engage with learning. Academic achievement is a strong focus, yet the Will Adams Centre also strives to develop students personally and socially so that they are better able to interact and succeed in society and the world of work.
In addition to our regular building and traditional classrooms we have a Music suite with state of the Art electronic equipment, a fully functioning Science lab, a Food Technology room with all the “mod cons” and a Kiln Room.
We also have a well- equipped and well- loved art room, a separate textiles room and an ICT suite with up to date equipment for Photography, as well as ICT courses.
Outside, we have extended our grounds and have a mini outdoor gym, a football pitch and we have just opened a new fully fitted out indoor gym which is open to all students at lunchtime as well as for PE lessons. Plans for the future include a Design and Technology room and showers for the PE area.
