What you will study
Unit 1 Bricklaying
The Student will be engaged in mixing mortar for the preparation of building a brick corner the bottom course will be 6 bricks, all joints will be finished off using a jointing iron. Face work will be cleaned with minimal smudging and no visual defects. On completion the work area will be left clean and tidy and all tools cleaned.
Unit 2 Carpentry and Joinery
The student will work towards identifying different types of timber, tools and equipment, for making basic wood work joints, this will include marking out the timber cutting and making the joints, when completed the working area will be left clean and the tools replaced safely in to a cupboard.
Unit 3 Painting and decorating
Students will have to prepare their work surfaces prior to painting, by using dustsheets on the floor, rubbing down, stirring and decanting the paint as per instructions, when painting they will use the correct brush/ roller and apply the paint to a given area, making sure there is no paint on any adjoining surfaces. brushes rollers and tools, will be cleaned at the end of the session,
How you will be assessed
Through a portfolio of your practical work and by completing theory units.
Possible Career and Further Education
Gaining a qualification in construction could help to get into further education or be in a position to take up a practical apprenticeship.
